QLED vs OLED TV, Complete Review

TV is something that has become a necessity with every house hold for entertainment purpose.

Even with the emergence of computers, laptops, and smartphones, still, TV is the best source of entertainment.

We had a lot of technology changes with TV. Starting from Mechanical TV to the current Smart TV with 3D features within a few decades, the advancement is excellent. Television is not the invention of one person, it’s the evolution of inventions. If interested in history, check the evolution of the television.

For simple understanding the below pictures are enough.

In this century our latest version of the technology is QLED and OLED. So QLED vs OLED TV, which is better to buy…

Aim of the article is to help you understand the difference and aid you to buy the best.

History of TV from Mechanical TV to Smart TV

During the course of time there were continous imprvement on the Display Technologies and Display Resolutions of TV. What we talk today of QLED and OLED are the modern version of Diplay Technologies. Do you know that there is nomuch difference between an LED and QLED TV…?

The purpose of the article is to explain QLED and OLED in detail, you will find the exact differences and which is better in this article.

Before that if you are interested in the evolution of the Display Technology the below pic summarizes it.

We will be discussing in depth of LED, QLED and OLED TVs in this article.

Also we will give a good comparison of theses display technologies.

It’s always wise to know what you are using or what you want to buy before looking for the best QLED TV or the best OLED TV.

Evolution of Display Technology

So we could find the starting technology was spinning disk and then CRT or Cathode Ray Tube.

Our area of interest is from LCD to LED and then OLED TV.

When you want to know what is an LED TV, before that you should know what is an LCD TV.

So the question is “What is an LCD TV?”

LCD TV and LED TV – Display Technology & Features

Among the display technologies, LED and LCD are the initial ones.

Also we should know that QLED TV follow the basic design type of these. At present the highest number of TVs sold around the word are LED and LCD TVs.

An LED TV is a type of LCD TV. You can understand “LED TV as LED lit LCD TV“.

Both LCD and LED uses LCD technology. The difference is that LCD TV uses cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) for providing lighting and LED the modern version of LCD uses smaller, more efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate the screen.

Since LED light emission is better all LCD TVs now use LED lights and hence we call them as LED TV.

Advantages of LED TV over LCD TV

  • Back Lighting of LED is better than LCD TV
  • Full-Array Backlighting possible with LED TV – As LED TV consists full-array of LED , comprising zones of LEDs that can be lit or dimmed in a process called local dimming. This creates more precise and even illumination. They can create better picture quality than CCFL LCD TVs were ever able to achieve, with higher efficiency to boot.
  • LED TV has Edge Lighting Feature – In LED TVs LEDs are also along the edges of the screen. You can find LED on all the four edges of the TV. This might cause differences in picture quality, but the overall brightness capabilities exceed what CCFL LCD TVs could achieve.
  • Local Dimming – This is a feature of LED LCD TVs wherein the LED light source behind the LCD is dimmed and illuminated to match what the picture demands. In contrast, LCDs can’t completely prevent light from passing through, even during dark scenes, so dimming the light source itself aids in creating deeper blacks and more impressive contrast in the picture.

LED and LCD TVs dispaly technology functions by delivering light fr

LED TV is an LCD TV that’s backlit with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) instead of standard cold-cathode fluorescent lights.

Since LED TVs are the most affordable and has high standardaisation these are the most sold TV globally.

Origination of QLED TV

QLED TV or Quantum Light Emitting Diode was developed by Samsung in 2013. Intitially it was known as Quantum Dot TV.

Samsung in 2017 re-branded their Quantum Light Emitting Diode to QLED TV.

Samsung then began selling its QLED TVs. It also established a licensing partnership with other major TV manufacturers

As a result you can find QLED TVs from Sony, Vizio, Hisense, and TCL.

Now let’s discuss what is this QLED technology.

Is it similar to LED and OLED?

What is QLED Display Technology?

QLED stands for Quantum Light-Emitting Diode. So obviously it is an LED TV using quantum dots. Similar to an LED TV, QLED TV also produces light more or less the same way as a regular LED TV, using a backlight made up of an array of LEDs.

Quantum dots are tiny nano particles. These quantum dots super-charge brightness and color.

In other words, the quantum dots, emit colored light when light is shone on them.

The quantum dots are contained in a film which forms just one of the many layers that makes a QLED TV.

QLED TV is an LCD / LED TV having an added quantum dot layer that improves brightness & color compared to ‘standard’ LED LCD TVs.

What is OLED Display Technolgy?

OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode.

OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) is a type of display tech that consists of a carbon-based film through which two conductors pass a current, causing it to emit light.

Here light is emitted on a pixel-by-pixel basis. A bright white or colored pixel can appear next to one that’s totally black or an entirely different color. The interesting fact this is one pixel doesn’t have impact on the other.

Do not go with the term “LED” in a OLED TV.

The fun part is unlike QLED and LED TV, the “Light Emitting-Diode” part of that name has nothing to do with an LED backlight.

This only refers to the fact that every single pixel produced in an OLED TV can be considered as a tiny LED light.

The light produced are extremely thin and can produce both light and color in a single element.

This makes OLED TVs not requiring a backlight because each pixel produces its own light.

This in technological terms are called as “Emissive,” or “self-emissive” display.

OLED TVs don’t use Light Emitting Diodes.
This is a self-emissive display. If a pixel is turned off, it emits no light and is therefore black. This is how OLED TVs can offer their “infinite” contrast ratios and why their blacks are so deep.

Having seen what are QLED and OLED TV technology, let us discuss on the comparison. The very way of the technology functions makes both of them different.

Check the comparison table below, which is made extremely simple for your understanding.

QLED vs OLED TV, Which is better and which one should you buy?

Feature

QLED TV

OLED TV

Sharpness

In QLED since there’s an afterglow and light leakage behind the LCD layer, it tends to blur the edges around bright objects.

OLED is sharper. It can turn each individual pixel on or off.

Deeper Blacks

The backlighting system required to make QLED sets work makes it impossible to completely eliminate light leakage

As light is emitted pixel by pixel, deep dark blacks are possible. In fact it’s only OLED TV that can deliver true black.

Brightness

QLED sets are more Brighter. The quantum dots put more light, making it ideal for sunny or bright rooms, where brightness is required.

Not as bright as QLED TV

Color

Generally, QLED TV can deliver a wider range of colors than an OLED set. They can also be more accurate.

Color range that can be reproduced in OLED TV varies with TV models. Some OLEDs is equivalent or better than QLED TV.

Contrast

QLED has a better color contrast. Subtle color contrast can be effectively brought out in QLED TV. But, when it comes with contrast of black color, it is behind OLD.

Contrast of colors with black nothing can beat OLED. But with other colors it is not a winner.

Which is Better QLED or OLED TV, final verdict?

Going through the technological features, we will find out there is no absolute winner.

Also many TV models try to outweigh their weakness with unique features be it QLED or OLED.

Both are robust technologies. And next generation display technology.

Now you can decide by adding the PRICE factor if you want to. OLED TV are more expensive than QLED.
